Groot is a sweet dog who would love to be a part of your family.  Just like his namesake (character from Guardian's of the Galaxy) he is quiet and only speaks when there is something to say. His bark actually sounds like he is saying "Groot."   He is great with kids who are over 10 years old (due to his large size) and does very well around small dogs.  He is crate trained but will jump up and snuggle on the sofa (if you let him).   He is housebroken and will let you know when he needs to go out.  He is in the process of being leash trained.

Groot was found on the side of the rode in Northwest Houston where he had been immobile for at least a week before he was picked up.  In addition to being low heartworm positive, he was most likely hit by a car because he had a fractured hip and torn ACL (which have healed nicely).  He might have always been a street dog because he does not know what dog toys are and DOES NOT LIKE squeak toys.  The sound seems to confuse and frighten him.  When he hears a squeak toy, he paws the ground and barks as if to say "keep that thing away from me!!"  He does not like thunder storms, but he is not nervous nor anxious.  He just wants to be near you during a thunder storm.  When I've had to leave him during a storm, he is crated, and I cover 1/2 of his kennel.  This makes him feel safe.  If you are not with him, his kennel is his safe place. A kennel for him when not with his humans is a must!  But the kennel is only partially covered during thunder storms.

He is learning "sit" and "stay" and is very much treat motivated.  He did very well when being groomed at Petsmart.  The groomer's comment "He is a very sweet dog and didn't fuss at all!)  Same thing when taken to the vet - no fussing at all.

Groot is not an alpha dog.  He is submissive and follows the lead of my 12lb poodle mixes.  In addition to my two dogs, he has been around my mom's 3 dogs ( 6 lbs - 10 lbs) and my sister's 45 lb lab/collie mix. He would do well with other dogs as long as they are properly introduced.

Puppies cannot be adopted outside of the Houston area until they are spay/neutered after they are 4 months old.

It is against the law in the State of Texas for a rescue not to be sterilized so we have to make sure it gets completed and that we have record of it.

NOTE: In our bios, we provide information based on our volunteer's experience with a particular dog; such as temperament, training, and ability to get along with others.

AARF is a 501(c)3 Non Profit, all breed, no kill organization. Our group is always in need of donations in order to continue to give the needed medical care to our rescues. Adoption fees do not begin to cover all of the medical costs. Any donation , no matter how small is a big help and is greatly appreciated. Please help us to continue to help them. Thank you.
